Recycled Garden

Planting a garden is a great hobby that has a great benefit, but concerned about the cost of the initial set up of a garden? Try a recycled garden.
Many vegetables, such as tomatos, strawberries and eggplant, can be grown in a pot, so get creative! Pots from the store can cost $5 and up, not so bad until you think about what you want to plant. If you are planting 10 vegetables you will be spending more than $50 just on pots. Try recycled containers! Things like large detergent bottles, plastic kitty litter containers or, for smaller plants, milk cartons make great pots without the extra money.
Another thing that can be quite costly is the proper soil for the vegetables to grow healthy. If you plan ahead you can avoid this by making your own compost.
It's not as hard as you think. A compost bin can be made from simple things like chicken wire and a 2x4. Keep things like cardboard, dryer lint, hair, newspaper and vegetable and fruit peels.
Don't waste your waste!

Soda Bottles

Our son uses every old 2 or 3 liter bottle he can find to start fruit trees. He has a virtual nursery on our back porch. He uses soil from the yard and seeds from the food we eat. He's turning dirt and trash into cash. :-)

Reusing Containers

I like this soda bottle idea to start fruit trees.

The idea of using seeds from fruit/food you have eaten and replanting them is a good reminder of keeping the food cycle going and very thrifty. I had aunts and uncles who would regrow their trees from
the food they ate but it seems to have sort of lost a hold in this genreation.

Mahalo!

How does he do that?

Does he cut the top of the bottles? I think this is a great idea!

Cuts Tops

Yes, he cuts the tops off. He also taps a nail through the bottom to allow some drainage. It ain't pretty but the price of planting pots is insane. Why pay $10 to you can recycle trash for free?
